Buzios is known as the ‘lost paradise of The Tropics’. The city came to fame in 1964 when Brigitte Bardot was photographed on a shoot at the beach, perfectly capturing the alluring waters which are just 192km form Rio. The most visited of its 25 beaches are Geriba, Ferradura, Ossos, Tartaruga and Joao Fernandes.
Day 1: During the day, the best option is to check out one of Buzios’ beautiful beaches, of which there are 25 in total. Geriba is popular with surfers for its turbulent waters. For those looking for calmer water, Ferradura offers glistening blue sea and a relaxing time in the sun. The most famous of the beaches is close to the city centre - Ossos. Night time is a good time to check out the many bars and restaurants along the waterfront.
Day 2: Some sites worth visiting in the city itself are the Museu Imperial (Imperial Palace); Brazil’s most visited museum. Take some time out to sit in the palace gardens and enjoy the French-style tearoom.
The Gothic-style Catedral de Sao Pedro de Alcantara houses the tombs of the Emperor and Empress. From there, visit the Imperial Chapel. Other places of interest are the summer home of air pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont, known as ‘A Encantada’. The lavish interior of the Casa de Petropolis has been restored and provides a great venue for art exhibitions and classical concerts.
Days 3-4: Take the time to venture to each of the beaches at your leisure. If you are interested in adventure sports, exciting activities are available such as wind surfing, trekking, mountain biking, kite surfing and wake boarding.
