Trujillo is very close to Chimu Adventures' heart as the city is where the Chimu civilisation evolved... and Huanchaco is a fantastic alternative to Mancora for a beach getaway.
Unmissable is the ancient Chimu adobe (mud brick) city of Chan Chan, the second largest archaeological ruin in the world, after Angkor Wat.

Day 1: Trujillo - Huanchaco
After our arrival in Trujillo we take a City tour, visiting the Main Square and the Cathedral, which was built in 1616 and destroyed by the earthquakes of 1619 and 1635. We also take time to visit the temple, which has three naves and an exquisitely engraved lower choir.
Later, we transfer to your hotel in Huanchaco Beach, an ancient Chimu port with its colonial church located at the highest point. Huanchaco Beach is famous for its Caballitos de Totora, straw boats still used by local fishermen.
Overnight at the Hotel.
Day 2: Trujillo: Chan Chan
In the morning, we take the short 4 Km journey north to Chan Chan. The ancient city once housed approximately 50,000 people and was declared a Cultural Patrimony by UNESCO. Here we can take time to appreciate its quaint streets, houses, pyramids and temples.
We visit the Huaca del Sol, a pyramid 20m high. According to legend, it was built in only 3 days using 250 000 people and 70 million blocks of adobes. We also have the chance to see the smaller Huaca de la Luna pyramid, where archaeologists have discovered a tomb with more than 40 dead soldiers.
Finally, we visit the Huaca Dragon, a temple dedicated to the Rainbow, located 5 Km from Trujillo. It is believed to have been a ceremonial centre of fertility. Its decorations show dancing warriors and the figure of a dragon.
We return to Huanchaco where we overnight.
Day 3: Trujillo: Departure
