Upon arrival at Santiago airport, we welcome you and transfer you to your hotel.
In the afternoon we enjoy a tour of the city, both old and new, including the Plaza de Armas, the city's central square which is home to the beautiful Cathedral and Post Office; the Cerro Santa Lucia, the hill on which Santiago was founded in 1541, with great views of the city; and finally the modern, commercial areas of Barrio Alto.
This morning we make the flight from Santiago to Calama. Upon arrival in Calama, we will make the spectacular drive to San Pedro de Atacama with views of the Cordillera de la Sal.
Once settled in San Pedro Atacama, we make a tour of this small, welcoming town, including a visit to the archeological museum of Padre Le Paige and the 17th Century San Pedro Church, with its roof made of cactus!
In the afternoon, we visit the Salar de Atacama, one of the world’s largest salt lakes and home to various species of flamingos (and other wildlife). The visit offers a terrific opportunity to get closer to these birds in their natural habitat.
En route to the Salt Lake, we shall visit the town of Toconao. The houses in this small picturesque village are built from bricks of white volcanic stone, giving the town a very unique appearance.
Early departure for the geysers of El Tatio. El Tatio is situated at an altitude of 4,500m (14,800ft) above sea level on the Altiplano. The geysers are spectacular in the early morning as the rising sun strikes the steam.
In the afternoon we set out to the Valley of the Moon to see the sunset over this bizarre, lunar landscape which has been formed by the erosion of salt mountains
This morning we transfer you to Calama for your flight, via Santiago to Puerto Montt, the capital of the Lake District.
Upon arrival in Puerto Montt, we will take you to Puerto Varas, where we spend the night on the shores of the picturesque Lake Llanquihue, overlooked by the Osorno and Calbuco Volcanoes.
Today is a chance to enjoy Puerto Varas' spectacular Andean setting: we spend the morning cruising Lago Todos los Santos (All Saint’s Lake) by catamaran arriving at Peulla, at the eastern end of the Lake in time for lunch.
Then, in the afternoon we hike through rare, native-growth forest in the Vicente Perez Rozales National Park to The Bride’s Waterfall.
We return by catamaran and coach to Puerto Varas.
Today, we head to Puerto Montt for some free time before we catch a flight to Punta Arenas in Patagonia, the southernmost city in Chile.
Upon arrival at Punta Arenas airport, we will make the drive over the pampas to Puerto Natales, where we spend the night.
We depart early for a full day in the world-famous Torres del Paine National Park. Among the many geographical highlights, we will see the legendary Towers (Torres) of Paine, Grey Lake and adjoining Grey Glacier.
We return to overnight in Puerto Natales.
Travelling back to Punto Arenas, we gain a last, spectacular view of the Patagonian landscape of Tierra del Fuego.
We then fly on to Santiago, where we transfer you to your hotel.
Today, we drive out of Santiago to the Pacific Ocean to visit Valparaiso, Chile's oldest port, with a UNESCO World Heritage-listed city centre. Of particular charm are the 15 funicular elevators, built in the 19th Century to connect the upper and lower sections of the town, and still in use today. Valparaiso was also home to Nobel Prize-winning poet and left-wing activist, Pablo Neruda, so we will pay a visit to his former house and studio.
Connected to Valparaiso is the popular beach resort of Vina del Mar, with its elegant hotels, restaurants and parks, offering a flavour of the French Riviera in South America. We spend time here, before returning to Santiago.
At the appropriate time, we transfer you to Santiago airport for your onward flight.
This trip could easily be combined with our Wine Trail, beginning or ending in Buenos Aires.
Or while in Patagonia, you could go further south to Ushuaia at the tip of Tierra del Fuego for our Ushuaia Stopover.
