Trek through Colca Canyon, the Realm of the Condor

More than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, right in the heart of the Andes and steeped in archaeology, Colca Canyon is a fabulous place to go trekking.

This four-day trek lets us enjoy the incredible scenery, wildlife, and unique atmosphere of the Colca area, as we hike from one traditional village to the next.

Day 1: Arequipa – Colca Canyon: Lunch & Dinner

This morning we pick you up from your hotel in private transportation and drive out of Arequipa, passing by the three most important volcanoes, Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu, and through the National Reserve of Aguada Blanca, where you can often see elegant, honey-coloured vicuñas and many groups of llamas and alpacas, as well as a variety of plants such as the Ichu and Tola.

The highest point on the route is at Patapampa (4800m), where you will have great views of the volcanoes: Ampato, Sabancaya and Hualca Hualca

You will arrive in the town of Cabanaconde in time for a delicious traditional lunch, before beginning the trek as we descend into the Canyon.

After five hours walking, you will arrive at the first community of Llahuar, where the River Colca and the River Huaruro meet. Here you can enjoy the thermal baths, observe the geysers and fish for trout along the river. And it is here that we spend the night in our camp.

Day 2: Colca Canyon: Llahuar – Fure: All meals

After breakfast, we continue our trek. First, we visit the ancient town of Llatica (2438m).

After hiking for some five hours, we arrive at a small village called Fure (2758m) a beautiful oasis. Here we have lunch and our campsite is located.

From here we can visit the Waterfall of “Huaruro” (80m high), in the afternoon, before return to Fure to spend the night.

Day 3: Colca Canyon: Fure – Sangalle: All meals

In the morning, we trek for roughly five hours to the community of Sangalle.  Here we have lunch.

In the afternoon, we can enjoy the hot springs (24ºC) and explore the surrounding area.

We have dinner and spend the night in our camp in Sangalle.

Day 4: Colca Canyon: Sangalle – Puno/Arequipa: Breakfast & lunch

This morning, we begin early to make the climb out of the Canyon.

Upon arrival in Cabanaconde, we will have breakfast. At this point, your private bus will be waiting for you will drive you to the “Cruz del Condor”, where you will observe the flight of the Condors, along with great views into the Canyon.

Afterwards we continue by bus to Chivay, enjoying pre-Inca tombs, Inca terracing and traditional Andean villages along the way, all set against the splendid mountain backdrop.

We have lunch in Chivay and then, in the afternoon, we continue to Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, arriving there in the evening. Alternatively, you can return to Arequipa, also arriving in the evening.
