North-West Argentina is the country’s Wild West – a frontier area of awesome landscapes, canyons, mountains, deserts and Colonial towns. Still little-visited but very welcoming, we urge you to make the effort to enjoy this wonderful area.
Day 1: Tucuman: Arrival
Upon arrival at Tucuman airport or bus station we transfer you to your hotel.
The rest of the day is free to explore the biggest city in northern Argentina.
Day 2: Tucuman – Tafí del Valle – Quilmes – Cafayate
We leave Tucuman today and head towards Tafí del Valle, visiting the Calchaqui Valleys on the way. We stop for a brief visit of the town of Tafí del Valle, including La Banda Church.
We continue to Quilmes, ascending the Calchaqui Mountains to a height of 3,042m (9,980ft) for spectacular views, before descending through Amaicha del Valle to Quilmes Ruins. Here, we visit this ancient settlement of the Diaguita tribe.
The Cafayate region is famous for its excellent Torrontes wines and so we visit a winery before settling into our hotel in Cafayate town.
Day 3: Cafayate – Salta
Today, we make the drive along Route 68 from Cafayate to Salta and through the Quebrada de las Conchas (The Valley of the Shells), with its remarkable rock formations created by wind and rain erosion, such as ‘The Amphitheatre’ and ‘The Devil´s Throat’.
We continue across the Lerma Valley to the city of Salta, where our hotel is located.
Day 4: Salta – San Antonio de los Cobres – Salinas Grandes – Purmamarca
Today we spend the day driving through San Antonio de los Cobres and the Salinas Grandes (Great Salt Flats).
In the afternoon, we continue to Purmamarca, a typical village from where will be able to admire the fabulous Cerro de los Siete Colores (Seven Colours Hill).
Overnight in Purmamarca.
Day 5: Purmamarca – Salta: Quebrada de Humahuaca Tour
On the journey back to Salta from Purmamarca we enjoy a full day-excursion to Quebrada de Humahuaca, including the Pucara Ruins and the towns of Uquia, and San Salvador de Jujuy.
We arrive in Salta in the late afternoon and spend the night here.
Day 6: Salta: Cachi Tour
Today we take a full day excursion to Cachi through Cuesta del Obispo (Bishop’s Cliff), Piedra del Molino (Millstone) and Los Cardones National Park.
Upon arrival in the picturesque town of Cachi, in the shadow of the Andes, we visit the Archaeological Museum and the Colonial-era church.
We return to Salta at the end of the day.
Day 7: Salta: Departure
Transfer to airport or bus station at the appropriate time.
